Support Groups
Periodically, I offer six-session grief groups for individuals who have lost a loved one to death. One of the many difficult aspects of losing someone so important, is that life as you knew it has stopped. Everyone around you is continuing on with their lives while you suffer, often in silence, feeling isolated and alone. As a society, we do not support the bereaved well and we tend to avoid grieving. A grief group can provide the support that is often lacking at a time when it is needed most. A grief group is not all about crying together. Yes, we share our sadness, but we also share the joy and richness that our loved ones added to our lives. We share insights gained from our experiences with caring, grieving, and finding ways to come to terms with loss. I have seen grievers make tremendous strides while sharing their losses with others. Since few people have safe places where they can truly express the myriad of emotions commonly felt after a loved one’s death, a grief group can be a life-changing part of the loss and healing process.
